Title: Tales of Rebirth (テイルズ オブ リバース)
Console: PSP
Genre: RPG (Action), Fantasy
Language: Japanese
Company: Namco
Summary: Official PS2 port. If there were only ONE Tales game to play on a portable console, I’d choose this one.
Story: 9. Pretty strong story for a Tales game. Although there’s a lot of typical racism and junk, but it makes for a story at least. And other crack elements because of Veigue and Saleh.
Characters: 9.5. KUREAAAAAA~~~~~~~ MAKES FOR GOOD GREAT.
Graphics: 9.
Sound: 9. Some reaaaally nice tracks from Sakuraba in this one, but there are also a few tracks I dread listening to which sets the score back down a bit.
Gameplay: 9. One of the better battle systems for the Tales games, imo. The three-line system makes things pretty interesting, and it’s a good substitute for not having the 3-D platform of the other games, which would probably be too much on a PS2-to-PSP port anyway. I also really liked the magic circles for status buffs and ailments, although they frustrated me at certain times as well. I had a LOT of fun with Annie and that.
Replay Value: 9.
Overall: 9. Score’s lowered mostly from what I’ve found to be usual faults for Tales games, and then the forging system. Ridiculous amounts of going back and forth places, no easy way to go from ends of dungeons after beating them, and overemphasis of doing thousands and thousands of battles and hundreds of hours of the same grinding. The grinding is exacerbated by the terrible forging system. The RANDOM CHANCE element of the forging system was the worst part ever. I hope Namco never uses anything like that in a Tales game again. Other than that, it’s one of my favorite Tales games! o_o;
